Turning Destruction Into Beauty

Galveston Tree Sculptures

Back in 2008 Galveston, TX was hit by Hurricane Ike and the storm destroyed many of the trees found throughout the city.  From this destruction came a brilliant idea, however, as artists came up with the idea of turning the broken remains of some of the trees into sculptures.   The idea caught on and there are now more than 20 such sculptures around the city.  Fortunately, many of them are located fairly close to each other and make for a great walking, biking, or driving tour.  Many of the sculptures feature animals (dogs, squirrels, dolphins, birds) but you will also find mermaids, characters from the Wizard of Oz, and more.  You can find out more about the sculptures here.  If you’re ever in Galveston, take time to check out this unique attraction.

Seeing The Past Through The Present

This particular sculpture is the largest in the city and features 18 birds carved into its branches.  Credit for the perspective for this photo goes to my dad, who noticed how interesting of a shot was created with the sculpture in the foreground and the trees not affected by the storm behind it.  You could almost picture how the tree had looked, fitting right in with the others before it was damaged by the storm.
